Heterostructured (Ba,Sr)TiO3/TiO2 core/shell photocatalysts: Influence of processing and structure on hydrogen production
نویسندگان
چکیده
Heterostructured powders composed of microcrystalline (mc-) BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 cores coated with nanostructured (ns-) TiO2 shells were prepared using a solegel method. The influences of annealing temperature, coating thickness, cocatalyst loading, and core size on photocatalytic hydrogen production were experimentally determined. The amount of hydrogen produced depends on the annealing temperature, which influences the interface, phase composition, light absorption, crystallinity, mesoporosity, and surface area. The heterostructured powders produced more hydrogen than ns-TiO2 alone when annealed between 500 C and 800 C. The amount of hydrogen produced by heterostructures with 100 e150 nm thick nanostructured titania coatings was greater than for thicker or thinner coatings. The optimum Pt loading was determined to be 1% by weight. Heterostructured powders consisting of mc-BaTiO3/ns-TiO2 produce more hydrogen than those with nanosized BaTiO3 cores, suggesting a size effect that is counter to the conventional relationship between catalytic activity and particle size. Heterostructured Ceramic Powders for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production: Nanostructured TiO2 Shells Surrounding Microcrystalline (Ba,Sr)TiO3 Cores
Heterostructured photocatalysts were prepared to have nanostructured (ns) TiO2 shells surrounding microcrystalline (mc) cores of (Ba,Sr)TiO3. The as-prepared heterostructures were annealed between 400°C and 600°C to improve crystallinity and core-shell interfacial bonding. X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and gas adsorption measurements demonstrated that 50 nm thick shells composed of na...

Heterostructured powders composed of microcrystalline PbTiO3 cores coated with nanostructured TiO2 shells were prepared by a sol–gel method. When exposed to visible light (l 4 420 nm), the heterostructured powder degrades methylene blue at a rate 4.8 times greater than PbTiO3, TiO2, or mechanical mixtures of the phases. The rate at which the heterostructured powder degrades methylene blue depen...
متن کاملVisible-light photochemical activity of heterostructured core-shell materials composed of selected ternary titanates and ferrites coated by tiO2.
Heterostructured photocatalysts comprised of microcrystalline (mc-) cores and nanostructured (ns-) shells were prepared by the sol-gel method. The ability of titania-coated ATiO3 (A = Fe, Pb) and AFeO3 (A = Bi, La, Y) catalysts to degrade methylene blue in visible light (λ > 420 nm) was compared. The catalysts with the titanate cores had enhanced photocatalytic activities for methylene blue deg...
متن کاملUV-visible-light-activated photocatalysts based on Bi2O3/Bi4Ti3O12/TiO2 double-heterostructured TiO2 nanobelts†
Surface engineering of TiO2 nanobelts by the controlled assembly of functional heterostructures represents an effective approach for the synthesis of high-performance photocatalysts. In this study, we prepared a novel Bi2O3/Bi4Ti3O12/TiO2 double-heterostructured nanobelt by depositing bismuth hydroxide onto the TiO2 nanobelt surface. A thermal annealing treatment led to the formation of a Bi4Ti...
متن کاملNovel antimonate photocatalysts MSb2O6 (M = Ca, Sr and Ba): a correlation between packing factor and photocatalytic activity.
Well-crystallized MSb(2)O(6) (M = Ca, Sr and Ba) powders synthesized by solid state reactions exhibit an interesting photocatalytic activity order of Ba > Sr > Ca for organic pollutant (methylene blue and phenol) degradation and hydrogen production from water under UV light irradiation. A simple model, crystal packing factor (PF), was introduced to account for the activity difference. Nine seri...
